Google’s Android platform is a mobile platform designed atop an open-source operating system. Android is installed on a variety of devices including mobile phones/smartphones and tablets. Android 3.0 is on the forefront of tablet operating systems. Android is the current #1 competitor to Apple and their mobile platform iOS and the iPhone and iPad tablet. Android also includes 3-rd party applications installed via an Android Market, where many apps are free and many are paid. Although Android is thought of as “open”, this is often the result of misconstruing the “open-source” operating system which Android sits on top of. The Actual end-user experience is more “open” in many ways compared to Apple’s devices, but not completely “open”. In fact “open” is an arbitrary term. Fragmentation is also a debatable subject of Android.
